Artist Ash Almonte
It’s RAW I consider myself an abstract expressionist painter who uses multiple mediums such as oil, acrylic, enamel, graphite and paint stick on canvas. I love color, and texture and feel that it really works in my expression. When I create my work, it is a full “body, mind and soul” experience. I feel, in some way, others pick up on how visceral or raw my work is too when they experience my art for the first time.
It’s REAL In my work I express my own personal passion, energy, thoughts, ideas and even convey my own personal stories of overcoming odds throughout my life in the hope that it may move others in some way. Symbols are an important part of telling my stories. For example, I have a series of self–portraits where I use fruits and vegetables. The series was created to portray the life I have today. And they represent my past too. There was a time in my life, for a couple years, where I peddled fruits and vegetables along the roadside to help my family make money. Because of that experience, an apple drawn in my work may represent a joyful time. Or a time filled with fear–or both. The fruits and vegetables also represent a nutritious life. A life filled with experiences, and obstacles. Working through these obstacles/journeys my soul has been fed a nutritious snack. Other symbols I love to use are hidden circles. Circles to me represent Unconditional Love, without an end or even a beginning. It goes on forever. I like to think that my work is infused with that love. I strive to keep it real in all areas of my life. With my art, it is no exception.
In conclusion, I like to think of my art as FOOD FOR THE SOUL. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s powerful. It’s filled with passion and love.
